Gay Priest Sex Abuse Victim Wins $600,000 Appeal

A California appeals court has upheld a lower court's finding that a Catholic priest molested a boy and his church colleagues and bosses were responsible for the crimes. Joey Piscitelli charged, in a civil case, that he was molested by a Salesian cleric in the Bay Area and that the priest's supervisors could and should have prevented the abuse. He was awarded a six figure verdict. The Salesians appealed the case, claiming there wasn't a fair trial. The 13 page order, in favor of Piscitelli, was apparently issued late yesterday. (PDF) ``In July 2006 a jury awarded Joseph Piscitelli $600,000 for sexual abuse he suffered from 1969 through 1971 at the hands of Joseph Whelan, who was the vice-principal of the Society-run high school Piscitelli attended at that time. The only issue on appeal is whether the trial court erred by letting Piscitelli impeach a former Salesian brother, Salvatore Billante, with evidence that Billante had been convicted of child molestation.''

Ex-Altar Boy Shows Signs of Homo-Priest Abuse

BURLINGTON, Vermont -- A Burlington altar boy allegedly molested between 20 and 50 times by the Rev. Edward Paquette in the 1970s continues to suffer low-grade depression and post-traumatic stress 30 years later, a psychologist testified in court Thursday. "His claim of experiencing anxiety and depression is borne out not only in his verbal report but in his test results," Dr. Joseph Hasazi of Burlington told the jury during the sixth day of a clergy sex abuse trial at Chittenden Superior Court. The alleged victim was a 9-year-old fourth-grader when he says the incidents occurred at Christ the King Church. The man, now 40 and a resident of Waitsfield, has sued the diocese, claiming it knew Paquette had a history of molesting boys in the years leading up to his abuse. The Burlington Free Press does not identify the alleged victims of sexual abuse without their consent.

Missouri Diocese Agrees To $10 Million Payment On Sex Abuse Lawsuits

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Roman Catholic diocese has tentatively agreed to pay $10 million to settle nearly 50 sexual abuse claims against the diocese and its priests. In a letter sent to priests with the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese late Tuesday, Bishop Robert W. Finn said the deal is subject to his approval after he consults with two diocese boards. Along with the money for the 47 claims, the tentative deal calls for the diocese to meet 19 other conditions, including publicly announcing and acknowledgin4g the wrongfulness of sexual abuse by its priests. Attorneys for the plaintiffs say it is the nonmonetary conditions that make the proposed settlement so important. The deal will settle all current sexual abuse lawsuits pending in Jackson County against the diocese and 12 current or former priests for incidents alleged to have occurred between 1951 and 1992.

Sex Abuse Priest Was Placed Near School

BELLEVILLE -- When it came time to finally decide what to do with a priest who was the subject of complaints over 15 years that he raped and sexually molested minors, diocese officials sent him to live next door to hundreds of Belleville elementary and high school students. "You put him right in the heart of a grade school and a high school?" attorney Steve Wigginton loudly asked the Rev. Joseph Schwaegel, a witness Thursday in a civil trial stemming from a 2002 lawsuit. In a barely audible voice, Schwaegel, who was removed from ministry in 1994 because of sexual addiction not involving a minor, said "yes." The lawsuit alleges that James Wisniewski, 47, of Champaign, was sexually assaulted by the Rev. Raymond Kownacki for five years beginning in 1973 when Wisniewski was a 13-year-old altar boy in Salem. The diocese is the sole defendant.

Judge Rules In Favor of Breakaway Groups from Episcopal Abomination

A Fairfax County judge dealt the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Virginia a third defeat in their efforts to retain millions of dollars of church property being held by 11 breakaway congregations. On Tuesday, Circuit Judge Randy I. Bellows ruled on whether the U.S. Constitution's contracts clause applies to the case and whether the breakaway churches had the right to invoke what's been termed the "division statute," an 1867 law that allows a majority of a breakaway church to retain the property. Tuesday's ruling is the latest chapter of a multi-trial battle pitting the diocese against the 11 conservative churches who broke away from the denomination over issues of biblical authority and the 2003 election of the sodomite Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson as bishop of New Hampshire.

Tentative $10m Settlement in K.C. Church Abuse Cases

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Roman Catholic diocese has tentatively agreed to pay $10 million to settle nearly 50 sexual abuse claims against the diocese and 12 of its priests. Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese Bishop Robert W. Finn on Wednesday apologized for the abuse that occurred at the hands of current and former clergy members, and promised that steps are being taken to make sure such abuse never happens again. "A priest is ordained with the privilege of celebrating the church's sacraments by nothing less than a holy order," Finn said at a news conference. "The behaviors attributable to certain priests involved in this matter not only betray those holy orders, but diminish the stature of the faithful and responsible priests who dispatch their ministry effectively and faithfully day in, day out."
